Is It Stress, Burnout, or Anxiety? How to Tell the Difference
Have you ever found yourself wondering,
“Am I just stressed…or is something more going on?”
It’s a question I hear often.
Many people know they don’t feel like themselves anymore, but they struggle to put words to what they’re experiencing.
Maybe you’re exhausted all the time.
Maybe you’re constantly worried.
Or perhaps you feel emotionally numb and disconnected.
The truth is that stress, burnout, and anxiety often overlap. While they share many similarities, understanding the differences can help you better recognize what you need.

🌿 Stress Is Your Body’s Natural Response
Stress isn’t always a bad thing.
In fact, it’s a normal response to life’s demands.
Stress often appears during busy seasons such as:
- Deadlines at work
- Moving
- Weddings
- Starting a new job
- Parenting challenges
- Financial concerns
When the stressful situation passes, many people begin feeling more like themselves again.
However, when stress continues for weeks or months without enough time to recover, it can begin affecting both the mind and body.
🌲 Burnout Happens When Stress Never Stops

Burnout often develops gradually.
Instead of feeling worried, many people begin feeling emotionally depleted.
You might notice:
- Constant exhaustion
- Difficulty caring about work
- Feeling detached from others
- Irritability
- Lack of motivation
- Feeling like you’re simply “going through the motions”
Burnout is especially common among educators, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and people who spend much of their time caring for others.
One way I think about burnout is like a campfire.
Stress is adding another log to the fire.
Burnout is realizing the fire has burned for so long that there’s very little left to fuel it.
🌿 Anxiety Often Continues Even When Nothing Is “Wrong”
Unlike stress, anxiety isn’t always connected to a specific situation.
Even when life appears relatively calm, your nervous system may continue reacting as though something is wrong.
Adult anxiety can look like:
- Overthinking
- Racing thoughts
- Difficulty relaxing
- Trouble sleeping
- Muscle tension
- Feeling constantly “on edge”
- Avoiding situations
- Needing reassurance
Many adults continue functioning well while quietly carrying anxiety beneath the surface.
🌄 Why They Often Overlap
It’s completely possible to experience all three.
For example, someone may begin with work-related stress.
Without opportunities to rest or recover, that stress gradually turns into burnout.
Eventually, the nervous system becomes so activated that anxiety continues even after the original stress has passed.
Rather than thinking of stress, burnout, and anxiety as separate experiences, it can be helpful to view them as different points along the same path.
🌿 What Can Help?
Although everyone’s experience is different, small changes often make a meaningful difference.
Helpful strategies include:
- Creating realistic boundaries
- Prioritizing restorative rest
- Spending time outdoors
- Practicing grounding techniques
- Building supportive relationships
- Learning how your nervous system responds to stress
- Seeking therapy when needed
Healing doesn’t require changing everything overnight.
Instead, it often begins with slowing down long enough to notice what your mind and body have been trying to tell you.
🌲 You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone
If you’ve been wondering whether you’re experiencing stress, burnout, anxiety—or a combination of all three—you don’t have to sort through it by yourself.
Therapy can provide a space to understand what’s happening beneath the surface while developing practical tools that fit your life.
Whether you’re navigating a demanding career, caring for others, or simply feeling overwhelmed, support is available.
